The first job, of course, is to get the car. Be it a classic Mini Cooper you’re hunting, or something more obscure like the quirky Austin Allegro and its square steering wheel, there are plenty of places to look.
A simple search on the internet can yield all sorts of treasures, while there are plenty of classic car trade magazines out there offering cars in various states of disrepair.
Of course, it’s advisable to give the car the once over in person before handing over cash for it – investing in a mechanic to come with you for an hour might seem like an extra expense but it could save you a lot more in the long run.
Possibly the most important thing is to make sure you don’t feel you are taking on more than you can handle, or are prepared to pay for. It might be that you just want something which only needs improvements to the bodywork. Alternatively, you might be prepared to take on chassis repairs, brake repairs and complete engine removal.
Once you have it safely stored at your home – preferably in a garage – the amount of work you put into it is entirely down to you. There’s plenty of advice out there, and nothing beats the voice of experience.
